As a Transportation Training Volunteer, you will assist refugees in learning how to drive and navigate the bus system in Lincoln.

Assist them in meeting practical needs such as grocery shopping, going to the library, helping children with homework and using the bus system. Contact with a refugee or individual is set up between the mentor and client on a weekly basis. This position may include transportation if the volunteer feels comfortable and is authorized. Interested volunteers will be invited to attend a Volunteer Information Session that is will be scheduled with the Volunteer Coordinator at our office on 23rd and O. Mentor Orientations are held monthly.

However, it is not always possible for refugees to attend these classes due to transportation issues, lack of childcare, or other circumstances. By becoming an ESL mentor, you can help remove these barriers and assist refugees, secondary migrants, and immigrants with acculturation to Lincoln and the English language. ESL mentors act as a teacher, advocate, and friend. Contact is weekly, coordinated between the volunteer and the client.
