Assist our prevention educators with our after school programs to teach youth about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, tobacco. Projects may include assisting with in person or online sessions, making copies of weekly curriculum, and assisting with community promotion. This is the perfect opportunity for education and social service students to complete their capstone projects. Hours are negotiable. This is a 90 day recurring role. CHI Health is looking to add volunteers to our team to help with the COVID-19 Screening at St. Francis Hospital!

Responsibilities:

This volunteer is situated directly off the elevator to the Maternal/child floor. They greet visitors and advise of room numbers, etc. Since we don't know when they will be busy or not, and they need to be stationed at that place, these volunteers are able to bring something with them to keep them entertained and busy when no visitors are there (crocheting, puzzles, magazine, book, etc). Shifts are flexible. Volunteers can sign up for a regular shift weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or choose to fill in when needed. 

Applicants are required to complete two background checks, an application (contact information only), have a Tuberculosis screen (free of charge with our Employee Health nurse) and during flu season have a current flu vaccination (provided at no charge when requested).

These volunteers have animals that are certified and have met certain criteria. We will visit with handlers to determine when they will volunteer with their dog as these times are fairly flexible, days, evenings and weekends.  Volunteers can sign up for a regular shift weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or choose to fill in when needed.

Stock Techs volunteer on the patient floors, stocking the drawers in patient rooms. Volunteers can sign up for a regular shift weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or choose to fill in when needed.

This volunteer takes our courtesy cart to patient rooms and family waiting areas. Included on the cart are magazines, books, puzzle books, lap blankets and often other amenities that are offered. Volunteers can sign up for a regular shift weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or choose to fill in when needed.

Cookie Bakers bake premixed cookies in a cookie oven for patients and families on the Maternal/Child floor.  There is one morning shift, one afternoon shift (must be after 1pm, prior to 3:30pm). Volunteers can sign up for a regular shift weekly, bi-weekly or monthly.

There is an ongoing need for adult mentors as many students are nominated for TeamMates.  Adult mentors apply online at www.teammates.org.  Following the approved application and backgrounds checks, mentors attend a 2 hour training and then are matched with a middle school student at the school of their choice and start weekly meetings.  Being a mentor is an exceptional way to connect with a young person and form a strong relationship built over time.  Watching a 12 year old grow into an adult that you get to connect to as a friend (not parent) is life changing, for both the mentor and mentee.

Occasionally we have group projects that are suitable for small to large youth groups. These projects enable youth to get to know and work with each other and experience a team setting.

Tower escorts help patients and families get to the areas they need to visit. Shifts may be available Monday through Friday 8-noon or noon-4.  Volunteers can sign up for a regular shift weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or choose to fill in when needed. The shifts currently open are Monday or Friday 8am-noon.

Cafeteria Concierges greet guests and help as needed keeping area clean and stocked. It's a fun opportunity for those who want to be busy all the time visiting and helping staff and visitors. Shifts may be available Monday through Friday 7:30/8-9:30am or 11-1:30pm. Volunteers can sign up for a regular shift weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or choose to fill in when needed.

Emergency Department aides stock rooms, help get meals, drinks or hot blankets as needed and may deliver information kits to patients transferred to patient status at the hospital. Must be able to keep information confidential. Shifts may be available Monday through Friday 8:15-noon/1pm, 1pm-5ish or 5-9pm. Weekends may also be available. Volunteers can sign up for a regular shift weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or choose to fill in when needed.

Clerks greet customers, help as needed with purchases, pricing, other duties.  It's a great way to see the merchandise as it comes in AND to visit with folks in the shop Shifts may be available Monday through Friday 9:30-noon, noon-2:30, 2:30-5, 5-7:30. Weekend shift is 11-2.  Volunteers can sign up for a regular shift weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or choose to fill in when needed.

Refugees arriving in the United States typically do not have the ability to drive nor have knowledge of the transportation systems (be it buses, taxis, etc.). As a Transportation Training Volunteer, you will assist refugees in learning how to drive and navigate the bus system in Lincoln.

Requirements: Potential volunteers must pass a criminal background check. Volunteers may also need to provide a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance for a DMV check. This position is great for volunteers available to commit to bi-weekly or weekly tutoring sessions.

As a mentor, you will help refugees learn English, teach them about life in American and help them become familiar with the Lincoln area. Assist them in meeting practical needs such as grocery shopping, going to the library, helping children with homework and using the bus system. Contact with a refugee or individual is set up between the mentor and client on a weekly basis. This position may include transportation if the volunteer feels comfortable and is authorized. Interested volunteers will be invited to attend a Volunteer Information Session that is will be scheduled with the Volunteer Coordinator at our office on 23rd and O. Mentor Orientations are held monthly.

Requirements: Volunteers must pass a criminal background check. They must also provide a copy of a valid driver’s license and proof of auto insurance for a DMV check, if applicable. This position is looking for volunteers available any day of the week, on a weekly basis, and requires a 3-6 month commitment

As part of our education and employment programs for refugees, we offer English as a Second Language classes with local affiliates. However, it is not always possible for refugees to attend these classes due to transportation issues, lack of childcare, or other circumstances. By becoming an ESL mentor, you can help remove these barriers and assist refugees, secondary migrants, and immigrants with acculturation to Lincoln and the English language. ESL mentors act as a teacher, advocate, and friend. Contact is weekly, coordinated between the volunteer and the client. Assessment of student is conducted to determine skill level and training is available for volunteers. Experience working in an ESL setting is helpful but not required. No bilingual skills are necessary.

Newly arrived refugees have a number of appointments when they first arrive to Lincoln. Refugees have no driver’s license, are unfamiliar with the area and local transportation systems, and need assistance with transportation to and from these appointments. These appointments may include such things as medical appointments, job interviews, and grocery shopping. As a volunteer, you would be introduced to a variety of people and with helping them with important tasks to their new lives in Lincoln.

Requirements: Potential volunteers must pass a criminal background check. Volunteers must also provide a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance for a DMV check. This position is looking for volunteers available weekdays on a one-time, occasional, weekly, or monthly basis.

General needs when they come up at Heartland United Way.

Lincoln classrooms need JA volunteers to teach lessons about money, careers, and entrepreneurship to Lincoln students. All materials and a step-by-step guidebook are provided. JA Staff will even run through the material with you! Lessons take place during the school day. Volunteers teach five 45 minute lessons. The schedule of these lessons depends on the school and teacher. Classrooms in EVERY LPS school and most parochial schools need volunteers. Volunteers meet with students who are practicing to go for their official U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services interview for naturalization. Volunteers assist students studying for the civics, reading and writing portions of the exam. If you like to work with people, and have an extra hour a week, we would love to have you volunteer with us! 

Students and volunteers meet on their own time and wherever feels most comfortable. Most matches meet at Multicultural Coalition or the Grand Island Public Library.
